Rangda is the queen of the Leak (witches) in the mythology of Bali. This fearsome creature is told often kidnap and eat young children and led an army of evil witches against Barong, which is a symbol of good strength. According to its etymology, the word known Rangda in Bali comes from the Old Javanese word meaning widow (janda). Rangda is the widow of the group called Tri Wangsa namely:
- Vaishya,
- Knight / Ksatria
- Brahmin / Brahmana
Subsequent developments to the widow (Rangda) term increasingly rare to hear, because it was feared cause bad impression given the form of Rangda is 'aeng' (spooky) and scary, and identical with those who have left science (pengiwa). This is especially we get in folklore performances. In other words, there is a sense of fear, hurt and embarrassed to say can neluh nerangjana (ngeleak). Told that most likely came from the queen Rangda Mahendradatta who live on the island of Java in the 11th century. He was exiled by the king Dharmodayana for alleged witchcraft against the king's second consort. According to legend he took revenge by killing half the kingdom, which later became his son and belongs Dharmodayana, Erland. Then he was replaced by someone who is wise. The name Rangda means also a widow.
Rangda is important for Balinese mythology. Battle against Barong or against the grants are often featured in the ballet. Ballet is very popular and an important heritage in the traditions of Bali. Rangda is described as a woman with long hair disheveled and has long nails, long tongue far, and breast length. Her face is scary and has long fangs and sharp.
The types of Rangda
Identify the types of growing Rangda in Bali is very difficult. This is because the form of Rangda in general is the same. Nyinga
If it resembles the shape of a lion face Rangda and slightly protruding forward (munju). The nature of this Rangda is fierce and savage.
Nyeleme
If the form of Rangda's face resembles a human face and a slightly widened (lumbeng). Rangda shape like this, shows a dignified and austere nature.
Rangsasa / Giant
If this Rangda face shape resembles a giant as a common form we see Rangda in general. Usually Rangda is creepy.
